Unique Programs

Few U.S. universities can brag that their engineering programs were built to directly assist with official national security and defense priorities. At Mason, the motivation to grow our extensive applied information technology and engineering degree offerings was in direct response to a request from the U.S. Government. Over thirty years ago, we were one of the first to offer specialized information security and assurance programs, and we hold the honor of having the first U.S. recognized civilian center of excellence in this field. 

Building on our reputation of spearheading new efforts in information technology, our programs have expanded to apply what we've learned about advanced computing and more traditional engineering disciplines. Your friends at other schools may build a combustion engine in their Mechanical Engineering lab, but at Mason, you'll be building sensors that detect faults in performance and help the machine run more efficiently.

Proximity to High Tech

There might be great engineering and computing programs at other universities and colleges, but few are within technology hot-spots such as the Northern Virginia Technology Corridor.  

CSC, Northrup-Grumman, Lockheed, Google, Amazon, Orbital, SAIC, CACI and many others have major offices a short drive from Mason's campus. Government agencies such as the CIA, NRO, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the National Institutes of Health – all located in the D.C. region  – set the pace for the newest technology applications.

Mason Computing and Engineering students, faculty, and staff will gain valuable resource support in the form of academic and community advice, inclusive classroom and curriculum knowledge or information about the best ways to leverage their diverse and unique skills to progress in their careers. The Office of Diversity, Outreach, and Inclusive Learning, whose staff will create and manage CEDRIC programming, is excited about the initiatives that will be launched through the Center.

Research of Consequence

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education ranks Mason among the highest research institutions in the country. Mason saw figures increase by $37 million from 2018 -- our strategic goal is $225 million by 2024. Mason's reclassification to an R1 university was driven by growth in resources devoted to science and engineering, which doubled. Mason, the largest public research university in Virginia, also increased the number of doctoral students to 2,098 enrolled in Spring 2019.

In addition to high-tech spaces on the Fairfax Campus, The engineering school has facilities at Mason's Science and Technology Campus, Arlington, and Songdo, Korea.
