Sustainable Infrastructure

Whether rebuilding roads and bridges, planning cities for the future, harnessing the sun's energy to power handheld devices, or studying the impact of floods on coastal cities, our students and scholars seek solutions to environmental problems that matter.

Sustainability. It’s everyone’s buzzword.

When it comes to civil infrastructure, our grads will transform concepts into reality to achieve sustainable cities and villages.

Our curriculum focuses on educating students not only in the science and application of engineering tools, but in their integration for engineering practice.

Students are trained to conceive, develop, design, construct, maintain and renew these systems, whether they're working in the Washington-metro area, the megacities of Asia, the small towns of America’s heartland, or the villages of the developing world.

Sustainable Cities, Sustainable Villages

Educational Programs Related to Sustainable Infrastructure

College of Engineering and Computing students and faculty are leading in the development of sustainable cities, towns, and villages. Mechanical engineers build solar-powered machinery, electrical and computer engineers develop efficient smartphone batteries, and civil engineers build LEED-certified structures and bring clean water to remote locations. Our educational programs reflect the care and concern for the world around us.

Bachelor's Degree

Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, BS

The bachelor’s degree program provides essential underpinnings in the theory and design methods of civil and infrastructure engineering for engineering practice. Students benefit from exposure to practical civil, environmental, and infrastructure engineering problems and their solutions in the classroom, lab, and field. The educational objectives of the Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering program describe expectations for graduates approximately three to five years after obtaining their BS CIE degree.

Mechanical Engineering, BS

With its emphasis on design and advanced manufacturing as well as renewable and sustainable energy, our mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree opens access to a wide array of projects for all of our engineering students. The new program is rapidly gaining support from the large number of companies and federal laboratories located in Northern Virginia including Micron Corporation, Mitre, and Technical Data Analysis.

Systems Engineering, BS

Students in the BS in Systems Engineering program may elect to enter an accelerated MS in Telecommunications Program while they are undergraduate students. The program is designed for qualified undergraduate students in the systems engineering program to proceed directly into the MS program, completing the two degrees with 144 credits. Students benefit from an accelerated program, and are well prepared to work in various fields to define, develop, and integrate such systems as computer networks, cars, intelligent robots, stereos, subways, and universities.

Master's Degrees

Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, MS
The Master of Science in civil and infrastructure engineering is designed for students who have completed the BS in civil engineering, although students with related undergraduate degrees may be considered for provisional admission. The MS educates students in the theory and practice of civil engineering science and design at an advanced level. The MS also serves as a foundation for doctoral study in civil engineering, as well as for additional graduate studies in architecture, law, business, economics, finance, and public policy and administration.

Systems Engineering, MS

This degree emphasizes both analytical and practical aspects of engineering complex systems. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in several quantitative modeling disciplines and to master practical aspects of systems design, engineering, and management. The program prepares students for a professional career in systems design, development, and management, associated with problem formulation, issue analysis, and the evaluation of alternative courses of action, as well as advanced graduate study.

Doctoral Degree

Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, PhD
The Doctor of Philosophy in civil and infrastructure engineering prepares students for advanced leadership positions in research and development in the public or private sector, academics, or government. Students may elect to study in the areas of environmental and water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, or transportation engineering. Both part-time and full-time study is available.

Systems Engineering and Operations Research, PhD
Mason’s doctoral program in Systems Engineering and Operations Research offers a unique integration of systems engineering and operations research. This integration gives students a strong analytical and computational capability and an overarching systems perspective that is well-grounded in the application. The program prepares students for leadership positions in research and development in government, industry, research organizations, and academia.

Finding Solutions Between a Rock and a Hard Place

About 40 students from professor Burak Tanyu’s geotechnical engineering class toured the 1,500-acre Cedar Mountain Quarry near Culpeper, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Mountain foothills. The students were studying sustainable roadbed construction.

Make a Career of Making a Difference
