About

The College of Engineering and Computing was founded in 1985 as George Mason University’s School of Information Technology and Engineering. Today, this large, multidisciplinary college maintains a dual pre-eminence in both information technology and engineering. Through teaching, research, and practice, the college seeks to graduate students who will take initiative, step up, and leave the planet better than they found it.

Dean's Welcome

More than 30 years ago, when George Mason University founded what would become the College of Engineering and Computing, the Apple Macintosh was a year old, the Sony Discman was the latest in portable music, and VHS was state-of-the-art for home theater equipment. Cell phones were the size of bound books and heavier than bricks.

The world is a different place than it was at our founding in 1985, and so is the college. We have changed our name, lived in three different buildings, and added classrooms, labs, students, and faculty. Our programs have expanded and evolved to match the ever-changing demands for engineering, computer science, and information technology.

As a Mason Engineering and Computing student, you may find yourself working alongside biomedical scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories at the Krasnow Institute, using 3-D printers to build scale models of bridges, or developing algorithms that analyze millions of data sets.

Our students travel beyond the boundaries of classrooms and labs to help bring water to school children in Nicaragua and to compete in RoboCup soccer tournaments around the world.

Our unique location in Fairfax, Virginia, puts us between the Dulles Technology Corridor and Loudoun County’s data center and Washington, D.C.
