The College of Engineering and Computing is offering many new classes at Mason Square in Arlington this academic year, including multiple sections of core courses for the Graduate Certificate in Naval Ship Design. Former naval research program officer Peter Cho teaches the fourth course, Defense Industry Project Management. “Mason Square is the perfect place to focus,” he says.

On Jan. 9, over 400 students from five counties and 22 high schools came together at Mason for CyberSlam 2023, to get hands-on learning about opportunities in cybersecurity. The huge gathering was deemed a state affair, as interest in CyberSlam increased significantly from last year.

Mary "Missy" Cummings was drawn to Mason by the university's emphasis on multidisciplinary research and teaching. One of the first challenges she wants to tackle is creating a new educational program in the design and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI).

Gurdip Singh is the divisional dean of George Mason University’s new School of Computing and a professor in the College of Engineering and Computing. He officially joined Mason on August 1, he is currently on assignment to the National Science Foundation. He will join Mason full-time in January 2023.

It has been busy year at the Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX). Since the George Mason University makerspace opened in its new space in Horizon Hall in September 2021, it has seen a lot of traffic—more than 9,000 visitors in spring 2022—and has some successes to report.

In 2006, George Mason University alum Anousheh Ansari, BS Computer and Electrical Engineering ’88, traveled to the International Space Station for an 11-day expedition and the first female private space explorer, first astronaut of Iranian descent, first Muslim woman in space, and fourth private explorer to visit space.
