About the Program

Mason’s PhD in statistical science emphasizes mathematical theory, computation, and data analysis. Coursework focuses on statistical computing, probability theory, and multivariate analysis. The program prepares students for careers in research as well as in industry and government, for positions such as senior statistician, senior data scientist, or senior biostatistician. Current research areas of key department faculty in the program include biometric identification, biostatistics, big data, natural language processing, measurement error, and more.

Program Opportunities

Department faculty members have active research in the areas of design and analysis of clinical trials, genetics, survival analysis, data confidentiality, and visualization of patterns in health data. The R. Clifton Bailey Seminar Series provides opportunities for students to engage with outside speakers on a regular basis. The department’s industry advisory board coordinates summer internships for students.

Graduates of this PhD program earn legitimacy as leaders in the field and can expect multiple opportunities for employment.
