Beginning in October, faculty from the Department of Information Science and Technology (IST) will begin offering a suite of fully online courses to working professionals who want to gain a competitive advantage in this high demand field.

When you complete the certificate you will be well-positioned for passing the AWS certification exams, including the Foundational Certification (AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner), the Associate Certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Developer), and the Specialty Certifications (AWS Certified Data Analytics, AWS Certified Security).

Learn About the Courses

Cloud infrastructure

Cloud infrastructure provides a detailed overview of cloud concepts, core services, security, architecture, pricing, and support.

Explore best practices and design patterns for building optimal IT solutions on cloud. A combination of lectures and hands-on lab assignments to the will help you become familiar with leading cloud computing paradigms and services.

This course uses AWS authored curriculum which prepares you for the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam.

Cloud Services Management

Cloud Services Management covers the fundamentals of building IT infrastructure on cloud. The course is designed to teach solutions architects how to optimize their use of the cloud by understanding different services and how they fit into cloud-based solutions. Although architectural solutions can differ depending on the industry, type of application, and size of the business, this course emphasizes best cloud practices that apply to all of them. It also recommends various design patterns to help you think through the process of architecting optimal IT solutions on cloud platforms.

Throughout the course, you will explore case studies that showcase how some cloud customers have designed their infrastructures and the strategies and services that they have implemented. Finally, this course provides opportunities for you to build a variety of infrastructures through a guided, hands-on approach.

Application Development in Cloud

Application Development in Cloud introduces techniques and best practices for developing applications to take advantage of availability, security, performance, and scalability of the cloud. Students will learn the server-less framework and develop, deploy, and test cloud-based applications using AWS.

This course is relevant if you are interested in taking the AWS Certified Developer-Associate exam.

Cloud Security Fundamentals

Cloud Security Fundamentals is an introduction to cloud security, and covers the fundamentals of building security into cloud platforms, and how to securely manage and access cloud environments using hands-on lab environments.

You will learn how to:

Access cloud environments using IPSec, and use the respective cloud VPN gateways. to identity and access management in the various platforms

Create and assign roles to users and groups

Audit actions taken and how most utilized security services in the cloud environments operate

Separate out environments using virtual networks for project and system segmentation

Apply virtual firewall rules and network access control lists

Amazon Web Services Cloud Security

This course builds on the concepts from Cloud 105 and focuses on the abilities validated in the AWS Certified Security – Specialty certification.

Learn to understand specialized data classifications and AWS data protection mechanisms.

Review data encryption methods and secure Internet protocols along with AWS mechanisms to implement them.

Work through scenarios where you are given a set of application requirements that make tradeoff decisions considering risk, cost, security, and deployment complexity.

Gain a working knowledge of AWS focused security services, the features provided by these services, and how these services are applicable to production environments.

When you enroll in this program your teachers will be experts in the field with years of experience. Here's what they have to say.

Assistant Professor Pouyan Ahmadi

Pouyan Ahmadi

Plan for a focused, targeted approach. This sequence is carefully chosen, thoughtfully organized training for cloud that is not offered in the bachelor’s degree at the current time.

“This kind of training bridges the gap between academics and industry,” says Pouyan Ahmadi, assistant professor in IST. "Employers are eager to hire people with this sort of training and 58 percent ask for experience in cloud computing by name.”

Ahmadi, who is a self-described networking guy, will be teaching the foundational course and a course in service management.

Adjunct Professor Randy Michak

Randy Michak is a Senior Technologist with over 25 years of experience designing, integrating, building, managing, and supporting enterprise-level software systems. He has the combination of both real-world experience and knowledge with cloud as well as industry leadership across a variety of cloud, database, and network platforms.

Michak, who is a certified Scrum Master and AWS Developer and Practitioner, will be teaching Application Development in the Cloud.

Adjunct Professor Bobby Varghese

Bobby Varghese

Be ready to hit the ground running.  Students should be sure that they understand cloud computing before enrolling and should have practical uses for what they learn, says Bobby Varghese, an adjunct professor in IST, who has been working in security for more than 15 years. “After the first course, all of the course work is hands-on. The program assumes that students already know the basics.”

“This certificate elevates the great work our faculty are doing and allows Amazon Web Services and others to take advantage of Mason talent.”
